General information only

Our guides, comparisons, calculators and checklists are general information to help you plan a deck in Ontario. They are not engineering, legal or professional advice for your particular project, and they cannot account for your site, soil, structure, exposure or budget.

We check guides against published sources and show the month of the last review, but products, standards and rules change. Where a manufacturer, code or municipality says something different from a guide, their current wording applies.

Cost estimates, including those from the deck cost calculator, are planning ranges, not quotes. A price is confirmed only in a written quote from the supplier or installer.

Permits, codes and safety

  • Permit requirements, setbacks and inspections are set by the Ontario Building Code and by each municipality. Confirm them with your local building department before you build.
  • Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for every product. They govern the product warranty, and they take priority over any general advice on this site.
  • Raised decks, guards, stairs, hot tubs, rooftop decks and structural changes may need drawings from a qualified designer or engineer. When in doubt, ask one.
  • Building work carries real risks. Use proper safety equipment, and call before you dig.

Prices shown in our guides are read from the Composite Deck Shop catalogue and refreshed in your browser. They are shown for comparison only. The price, availability and terms that apply to an order are those confirmed by Composite Deck Shop at checkout or in its written quote.

This site does not sell products or take payments. Orders are placed with Composite Deck Shop, under its own terms of sale, warranty and return policies.

Quotes and installer referrals

Sending a quote or installation request does not create a contract or commit you to anything. Installers contract with you directly. They confirm the scope, price, schedule, permits and warranty in writing and are responsible for their own work. Check any installer's insurance, WSIB coverage and references before you sign; our guide to choosing a deck builder lists what to ask.

Brand names

Product and brand names such as Fiberon, Trex, TimberTech, AZEK and Lunawood are trademarks of their owners. We use them to identify and compare products. Mentioning a brand does not mean its owner sponsors or endorses DecksToronto.

Our content and photos

The text, diagrams and photos on this site belong to DecksToronto or to the people and companies credited with them. You may read, print and share links to our pages for your own project. Please ask before copying our content or images for another website or for commercial use.
