Step 3

What to do with the samples once they arrive

Look at them outdoors, twice

Ontario cloud flattens colour and afternoon sun lifts the red out of it. A board chosen under kitchen light is chosen under the one light it will never live in.

Hold them against the house

Put each board against the siding, the brick and the fence it will sit beside — undertone clashes show up there long before they show up on a swatch grid.

Leave them in the sun and touch them

Half an hour of direct sun tells you what a dark board does underfoot in July. Compare a dark and a light sample side by side rather than trusting either alone.

Leave them outside for a week before deciding. Rain, pollen and a boot scuff say more about a finish than a clean offcut does — and our materials comparison covers what each family does over the years that follow.

Sample questions, answered

Are the samples really free?

At the counter, yes — walk into any of the five stores, ask for the lines you are shortlisting and take them home. There is no fee and no minimum. The $20 applies only when you want the set shipped to you instead, and it is one flat $20 for the whole order, not $20 a board.

How many samples can I ask for?

Up to 5 in one request, which is more than most people end up comparing. If you want a wider sweep than that, visit a store — every line on this page is on display in full-length boards, which tells you more about grain repeat than a short offcut ever will.

What exactly arrives?

A short offcut of the real board — the same colour, the same cap, the same surface texture as the boards that would ship for your deck. It is a piece to hold, wet, scratch and leave outside, not a printed colour card.

Does the Quebec showroom carry the same lines?

Not all of them. Magasin de Patio in Delson listed Fiberon, Trex, TimberTech, TruNorth, Clubhouse, Citadel and Lunawood when we checked on 7 September 2026, so call ahead before driving out for a line outside that list. The four Ontario stores carry the full catalogue on this page.

Can I get railing, siding or fence samples too?

Yes — ask in the notes box. The picker on this page covers decking boards, but railing colours, fence profiles and siding samples all exist and the stores keep them on hand.

Does DecksToronto sell the decking?

No. DecksToronto is the educational side of the business: guides, planning tools and material advice. The boards, current pricing, stock and delivery all belong to Composite Deck Shop in Ontario and Magasin de Patio in Quebec, and that is where your sample request goes.
